There are about thirty recognized kings in Nigeria, but some are obviously more prominent than others. So we want to look at the top 10 first-class kings in Nigeria 2023.
Nigeria as a nation does not practice a form of government, it is too heterogeneous to operate just one kind of government. Nigeria has a President, Governors, and Kings (Heads of Societies and sometimes states).
Civilization came to Nigeria alongside a lot of attributes that overshadow many old practices of our people.
In the precolonial era, the country operates under a Monarchy form of government. Each metropolis was governed by a leader traditionally chosen by the people and sometimes gods of the land, depending on the custom of the people.
In no particular other, the list of the top 10 first class kings in Nigeria 2023 goes like this:
1. Alaafin of Oyo
The late Alaafin of Oyo is one of the most rated Nigerian kings. He was still said to be a first class king until 2023, before his death. Oba Lamidi Adeyemo III was an influential Nigerian king during his reign, he was the most prominent Yoruba king.
Lamidi died when he was 83, after ruling for fifty-one years.
It has always been on record that all ruling kings of the old Oyo empire are always regarded as first class kings, so the death of the most recent King does not affect the list of the top-rated Nigerian kings.
2. Emir of Kano
The 15th king of the united people of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero is another prominent king on our list of the top 10 first class kings in Nigeria. The king born in 1961, is also the chancellor of the University of Calabar.
He assumed the seat on March 9, 2020. This is after the deposition of his nephew, Muhammad Sanusi II.
3. Sultan of Sokoto
Sokoto like many Nigerian states has had several kings who are regarded as sultans, but we want to talk about the most recent of them.
Sa’adu Abubakar, the 19th Sultan of Sokoto was born on August 24, 1956.
He attained the throne on November 2, 2006.
We must also note that anyone who holds this position in the country, is automatically influential.
4. Ooni of Ife
Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi born in 1974 is the 51st king of the great Ife land.
As a matter of fact, many argue that the king is greater than the Alaafin of Oyo.
5. Dein of Agbor
Dein Keagborekuzi I, born on June 29, 1977, is one of the top 10 first class kings in Nigeria 2023 and of all time.
He is the Dein of the Agbor Kingdom, a metropolis in Delta State, Nigeria.
6. Obi of Onitsha
Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe is a significant Nigerian king, occupying the Onitsha, Anambra State Kingdom.
His name must not be exempted from the list of the top 10 first class kings in Nigeria, because he is one of the highly rated, with a reasonable amount of assets.
7. Oba of Lagos
Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos state, also known as Eleko of Eko, is one of the top Nigerian kings. He cannot be excluded from the list of the top Monarchs in the land, Lagos, the state which he runs, being the wealthiest in Nigeria. He is one of the Yoruba Nigerian influential kings.
8. Oba of Benin
Coming after Erediauwa, is another top first class Nigerian king, Ewuare II. He is a traditional ruler and leader of the kingdom of Benin.
Ewuare born on October 20, 1953, was crowned and assumed the throne in 2016.
9. Olu of Warri
The Ogiame Atuwastse III of Warri born on April 2, 1984, is a prominent king ruling the kingdom of Warri.
He assumed office as a king on August 21, 2021.
10. Olubadan of Ibadan
Ibadan is one of the oldest Yoruba land, founded in the 16th century.
The case of the Olubadan of Ibadan can be likened to that of the Alaafin of Oyo State. It is a title given to the king of the Ibadan land.
Late Saliu Adetunji, the most recent King of Ibadan, who was formerly a Balogun in the land was also very influential in his time. He died on January 2, 2023, when he was 93.
